A MOVABLY MOUNTED SIDE DAM AND AN ASSOCIATED METHOD OF SEALING THE SIDE DAM AGAINST THE NOZZLE OF A BELT CASTER

A side dam (122) for a caster having a nozzle (170) for delivering moltenmetal into a mold. The side dam is movably mountedto the caster so that it can be securely sealed against the nozzle to resistmolten metal in the mold from leaking between the nozzle andthe side dam. An adjustment system is also disclosed which adjusts thepressure of the side dam against the nozzle in order to insure atight secure seal of the side dam against the nozzle while at the same timeadjusting the pressure of the side dam against the nozzle so thatexcessive undesired frictional wear of the nozzle is avoided.
