AORTIC OCCLUDER WITH ASSOCIATED FILTER AND METHODS OF USE DURING CARDIAC SURGERY

This invention is a balloon arterialcannula and methods for filtering blood.The device generally includes a mesh(75) for filtering blood flowing within ablood vessel, particularly within an arterysuch as the aorta. A structure adapted toopen and close the mesh within the bloodvessel, a means to actuate the structure,a balloon occluder (65) which typicallyincludes a flexible material enclosing achamber. The methods generally includethe steps of introducing a mesh into ablood vessel to capture embolic material,adjusting the mesh, if necessary, duringthe course of filtration, inflating theballoon occluder to occlude the vesselupstream of the mesh and thereafterdeflating the balloon occluder, removing themesh, and the captured foreign matter from the blood vessel. Additionally,visualization techniques are used to ensure effective filtration.
