Joint channel estimation andmaximum likelihood decoding method for CodedOrthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(COFDM) systems are presented. Using thismethod in conjunction with convolutional coding,robust and nearly optimal coherent detection canbe achieved in rapid dispersive fading channels.Significant performance gain in packet datathroughput is realized in a system with aggressivefrequency reuse. A system for estimating channelcharacteristics in a multicarrier transmissionsystem comprising means for receiving amulticarrier signal, means for applying FastFourier transformations to the multicarrier signal,means for estimating channel characteristics ofa multicarrier channel over which the multicarriersignal was transmitted using iterative processingand means for decoding the transformedmulticarrier signal is presented. Also presented isa method for estimating channel characteristics ina multicarrier transmission system comprising thesteps of receiving a multicarrier signal, applyingFast Fourier transformations to the multicarriersignal, estimating channel characteristics of amulticarrier channel over which the multicarriersignal was transmitted using a combinationof iterative processing and iterative backwardprocessing, and decoding the transformed multicarrier signal.
