A photolytic and photocatalytic reaction enhancement device comprising acatalystcoated, fluid permeable fixed-substrate material preferably constructed ofeither puretitanium or tungsten or their alloys that is oxidized or anodized to form atitanium dioxideor tungsten oxide layer, respectively, or a corrosion-resistant metal alloythat can becoated with a photocatalyst. In a preferred embodiment, the substrate may be aglass,polymeric or ceramic composition containing micropores, channels or conduitswhichreceive oxidizing, reducing and/or pH agents. The catalyst is a semiconductorsuch asTiO2, WO3, Fe2O3, or titanate-based materials compatible with the process andmay bemetallized. The structure and configuration of the substrate each serve tooptimize bothphotocatalyst surface area and turbulence of the target fluid within themaximum UVillumination area of the reaction chamber, thereby enhancing photocatalyticreactivity.The substrate is generally comprised of a length of mesh or cloth-likematerial which,in the preferred embodiment is folded or "pleated" in accordion-like fashion.A pluralityof panels are created by the folding, each being adapted with a centrallylocatedaperture for slidable reception of the UV light source there through. Theedges of eachaperture may be optionally modified with a special coating to prevent damageto thescratch-prone outer surface of the UV source as well as actually clean thesurfacethrough manual contraction and extension of the accordion-like substrate.Alternatively,a UV transmissive sleeve may be employed between the UV source surface and thesubject invention. The subject device may be removably installed withinconventionaland more novel, commercially available UV chambers without modificationthereof orthe use of invasive mounting means.
