According to the inventive method for verifying the integrity and authorship of and encoding and decoding texts, a 'digital signature' is calculated from a text with a one-way algorithm and a code number and is reconstructed in a secure module which is accessible by telecommunication, for the purpose of verification. A comparison of the two values (identity or non-identity) determines whether the text is authentic or not. Said module contains a database so that the digital signatures of all of these subscribers can be verified in the module. In said database, all of the code numbers are combined with a reference to the particular owner that is provided in the form of an identifier. When the identifier of a subscriber has been input, the corresponding code number becomes available for calculating the signature or for decoding encrypted texts and encoding clear texts. A trustworthy authority ensures that owners have proven their identity and the relationship between the identifier and this identity before these pairs of values are entered into the code number base. The identifier (K), a text seal (S) that is calculated from the text characters and their arrangement with a one-way algorithm, and a digital signature (U) that is calculated from said text seal are used to produce the so-called digital imprint that legally replaces a handwritten signature, in the following form: K = 72085 33172 74938, S = 04381 80478 53911, U = 42866 39105 82053.
