The present invention broadly relates to the attenuation of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). More particularly, the invention relates to the identification of mutations in the HSV-2 USUBL/SUB24 gene which attenuate the pathogenicity of HSV vectors in mammals and immunogenic compositions thereof.
