The invention relates to a method for depicting a map indicating traffic routes on a display device of a vehicle navigation system, during which a map scale and/or a degree of detail of the map display are/is adjusted. The inventive method is characterized in that a driving situation of the driver is determined and that the map scale and/or the degree of detail of the map depiction are/is automatically adjusted according to the driving situation. The invention also relates to a navigation system comprising a display device for depicting a map the indicates traffic routes and comprising means for adapting a map scale and/or the degree of detail of the map depiction. This navigation system is characterized by means for determining a current driving situation of the vehicle and in that the adapting means are configured in such a manner that the map scale and/or the degree of detail of the map depiction are/is automatically adjusted according to the driving situation. The invention improves the adapting of the information density of the depiction to the respective driving situation-related need for information by the vehicle driver. This results, in particular, in avoiding overstraining the vehicle driver with an unmanageable flood of information.
