The inventive method for producing a damping member (4) having a specified geometrical configuration consists a) in forming a compact gel unit (5) having said geometrical configuration by moulding, shaping, cutting-off or another appropriate means and b) in forming a polymer film (10) through the part or the entire external surface of said unit (5) by spraying or projecting and cross linking a crosslinkable dispersion of said polymer. In order to produce a damping device (1) for supporting a object (11) to be protected against impacts and vibration, wherein the damping member (4) is disposed between a supporting member used as a support (2) for the protected object (11) and a bearing member (3), the spraying or projection of the crosslinkable polymer dispersion is carried out on the apparent surface of the unit after the unit is mounted on the bearing member (3) or, possibly, between said bearing member (3) and the supporting member (2).
