The invention relates to a method for increasing the braking effect in a motor vehicle comprising a hydraulic brake system. According to said method, a brake pressure in at least one wheel brake is increased to a pressure limit having a first value by switching on a power supply unit when a brake pressure exceeds an activation threshold determined in accordance with a vehicle deceleration. The inventive method is characterized in that a pressure limit (pLIM) is raised to a second value (pMAX,FBS) when the brake pressure (pTHZ) exceeds the activation threshold (pTH) within the main brake cylinder. The invention further relates to a device for carrying out the disclosed method.
