When the detected methane gas content exceeds a maximum permitted threshold value, an alarm signal is triggered. Said methane gas-monitoring system also comprising an NGM sensor unit (1) for detecting gas. In order to achieve long-term active protection against unnoticed sensor failure at minimum expenditure, the NGM-sensor unit (1) comprises a sensor element (3), an evaluation circuit (6) and an interface and can be inserted into the NGM-sensor device and removed therefrom in the form of a modular element. Said modular element is replaced at regular intervals.
