A method for increasing dry matter production by a selected nitrogen-fixing legume. The method comprises selecting a rhizobial bacterial culture capable of infecting and establishing an effective symbiotic nitrogen-fixing relationship with said legume, and manipulating the culture to impair and/or inactivate therein triose-phosphate isomerase enzyme activity. The culture may be genetically manipulated by inserting into the rhizobial bacterial DNA, at least one nucleotide sequence configured to interfere with the synthesis and/or activation and/or functional activity of a triose-phosphate isomerase enzyme. Compositions for inoculating legumes comprising rhizobial bacterial cultures manipulated to inactivate therein triose-phosphate isomerase enzyme activity. A biologically pure rhizobial bacterial culture, said culture manipulated to impair and/or inactivate therein triose-phosphate isomerase enzyme activity.
