A co-processor (7) in an automating device (1) controls a technical facility and runs a program module (5) included in a control program (3). The program module for the control program runs on the co-processor. During operation, the program module is called up by a central processing unit (CPU) for transmitting processing results to the CPU after running a control function. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an automating device with a central processing unit for running a control program so as to control a technical facility.
