The present invention relates to a method for providing an optical interface with at least one optical coupling structure (152), such as for example wave-guides and/or microlenses, for a packaged optical device. The device comprises an external alignment structure (156), having a support means (158) with at least one hole (160) and at least one alignment feature (162). An encapsulation is then provided, by providing at least optical encapsulating material (154) into the hole (160) of the support means (158). Optical coupling structures (152) such as wave guides or microlenses may be provided into said encapsulation (153) at a well-defined position relative to said at least one alignment feature (162) of said external alignment structure (156). In this way, by providing the optical coupling structures directly in the material comprised in the encapsulation (153), a high degree of alignment accuracy is obtained.
