LYCOPERSICON PIMPINELLIFOLIUM AS A SOURCE OF RESISTANCE TO THE PLANT PATHOGEN PHYTOPHTHORA INFESTANS

PURPOSE: Tomato plants(Lycopersicon esculentum) and Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium plants is provided to be resistant to the tomato strain of P. infestans races 0 and 1. CONSTITUTION: After crossing an Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium plants discovered to contain a new allele(s) which confers resistance to P. infestans races 0 and 1 with an Lycopersicon esculentum, the seed is collected and regenerated into plants. The resulting plants are evaluated for resistance to the tomato strain of P. infestans races 0 and 1 and plants demonstrating resistance are identified and selected. These selected resistant plats are backcrossed with other Lycopersicon esculentum lines displaying desirable phenotypes to obtain commercially acceptable varieties which are resistant to the tomato strain of P. infestans races 0 and 1. The plants can also be produced by protoplast fusion.
