The method involves having rectangular plates (1,2,3) produced from steel and being able to be placed on top of each other. The surfaces of the plates (1,2,3) are treated before being placed on top of each other. The surfaces are released of unwanted foreign particles such as scales using chemical substances. The plates, lying on top of each other form a disk package (4) to be welded. The package (4) is warmed up to a hot-rolling initial test temperature and then hot rolled to form a strip. The strip is formed as a coil. The plates are cut and form slabs. The surfaces (5,6,7,8) of the plates during cleaning are pickled.
