PURPOSE: An intestinal glucose absorption inhibitor isolated from Laminaric japonia and a purification method thereof are provided, which intestinal glucose absorption inhibitor is useful for development of functional food or medicines for prevention or treatment of diabetes and obeseness. CONSTITUTION: The method for purifying the intestinal glucose absorption inhibitor isolated from Laminaric japonia comprises the steps of: fractionating the methanol extract of Laminaric japonia with hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and methanol; subjecting the methanol fraction to 60G column of silica gel using an eluting solvent consisting of chloroform and methanol; fractionating the active fraction with the ODS gel plate and a developing agent consisting of methanol and water; and subjecting the active fraction to HPLC using water and methanol gradient.
