Apparatus for de-interlacing video data using motion-compensated interpolation and method thereof

PURPOSE: A device and a method for de-interlacing using a motion compensation type interpolation provide excellent contour preservation ability by estimating bi-directional motion vectors between consecutive successive fields based on interpolated pixels. CONSTITUTION: A device for de-interlacing using a motion compensation type interpolation includes a bi-directional motion estimating part(410), a space time smoothing part(420) and a signal converting part(430). The bi-directional motion estimating part obtains motion vector between successive input present field and the former field, assigns the motion vector to a field to be interpolated, and estimates motion vector assigned based on the field to be interpolated. The space time smoothing part sets motion vector of surrounding blocks, which has the minimum pixel difference, as motion vector of the present block after valuating exactness of motion vector of the present block in the field to be interpolated. The signal converting part sets an average value of the pixel values as pixel of line, which does not have image data.
