The endoscope has an elongate insertion section along which illumination light is directed via an optical fibre, for illuminating the area adjacent its distal end, with detection of the reflected light via the pupils of a pair of objective lens systems (21a, 21b), arranged parallel to the distal end section. The corresponding images (7a, 7b) obtained in the respective focal planes are fed to the proximal end of the endoscope via a common transmission lens system (22). Pref. the transmitted images (10a, 10b) are directed onto respective photodetector image reception surfaces, for providing corresponding electrical signals, fed to a display monitor.
