In an electrode/electrolyte unit, the electrode and electrolyte are separated by an ion conductive interlayer which contains an additional element which is in its highest oxidation state, when the electrode is a cathode, and is in its lowest oxidation state, when the electrode is an anode. In an electrode/electrolyte unit, the electrode consists of an oxide, sulfide, nitride, fluoride, chloride and/or carbide containing a conduction ion-forming element (e.g. lithium) and a transition metal or of an alloy containing the conduction ion-forming element and the solid electrolyte consists of an oxide, sulfide, nitride, fluoride and/or chloride containing the conduction ion-forming element and a main group element and/or transition metal. The novelty is the provision of the interlayer described above, the interlayer being resistant to solid state reaction with the electrode material and consisting of an oxide, sulfide, nitride, fluoride and/or chloride containing the conduction ion-forming element and the additional element described above. Also claimed are production of the above electrode/electrolyte unit, a thin film battery containing the above electrode/electrolyte unit and an electrochromic device containing the above electrode/electrolyte unit.
