Before introduction into the body of acid water to be treated, the alkaline iron hydroxide sludge solids concentration is adjusted 0.1-1 wt%. Solids concentration in the treated body of water is adjusted to 0.1 wt% at most. This is achieved by the manner of distribution and additional movement of the addition, as a function of water depth. Before introduction, solids concentration in the iron hydroxide sludge is reduced below 0.1%, using water from the body of water being treated. Iron hydroxide sludge is intentionally washed down into the waters, the depth of which exceeds 2 m. Carbon dioxide is introduced into the iron hydroxide sludge, before introduction into the water. The distribution equipment is moved over the pond surface in accordance with local conditions and flow processes driven by the weather. The water quality is influenced especially, where there are groundwater flows to or from the body of water, where there are flows to or from the surface, and where water is extracted.
