Odor Control Benefits of Water Treatment Plant Iron Hydroxide Sludge at the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority's Southside Water Reclamation Plant

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (Water Authority) operates a surface water treatment plant (San Juan Chama Water Treatment Plant) and a water resource recovery facility (Southside Water Reclamation Plant) to meet the needs of 670,000 residents in the Albuquerque, NM metropolitan area. Water treatment plant iron sludge provides a neutral pH source of ferric iron that can offset the cost of virgin ferric chloride otherwise needed for collection system odor control. This presentation describes iron sludge addition impacts on Southside Water Reclamation Plant operations during a program started in March 2018 and which continues to the present. By carefully managing the mass load of inert, non-iron solids being added, adequate wastewater treatment can still be achieved. The iron sludge addition program will allow the Water Authority to reduce the size of a permanent dewatering facility now being planned for its water treatment plant.
