The tensioner has an electromechanic actuator (1) for admission of drive and timing belts, and force measuring device for measuring the belt tension. A control device is so designed that the belt tension is controllable in dependence on the measured belt tension, a motor rotation speed and motor rotation speed-dependence parameter at a predetermined value. A pre-stressed spring is arranged between a housing and a lever of the actuator. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a motor vehicle with an internal combustion engine having an electromagnetic belt tensioner (B) a method for adjusting a belt tension in an internal combustion engine.
