The application relates to a method for tracking product data of a product mass flow (11) in a transport route (12) of the tobacco processing industry, comprising the steps of: generating product data sets (30a, 30b, 30c, ...) each having approximately equal portions (11a , 11b, 11c, ...) of the product mass flow entering the transport path, writing the product data sets (30a, 30b, 30c, ...) into corresponding storage units (25a, 25b, 25c, ...; 26a, 26b, 26c ...) of a FIFO memory (25; 26), and reading of the from the transport path (12) exiting product mass flow corresponding product data sets from the FIFO memory (25; 26). The application further relates to a corresponding product data tracking system.
