A measuring device (10) detects the time intervals (ZS), for which functional components are faulty. The error data (FI), which is generated when a faulty condition such as low oil pressure is detected, is stored in memory (11). The error data (FI) includes the total operating time (GD) that the motor vehicle was operated despite the fault and is determined by summing up the individual time intervals (ZS). The measuring device (10) is connected to switch on and off on actuation of the ignition controller (20).
