The device has two ultrasonic transducers arranged opposite to each other at known distance. An evaluation unit evaluates the bone mineral density from the time required by the sound wave to cross the distance between the transducers. An arithmetic and logic unit considers the correction factors which are determined from the sound running times in the soft tissue and in the coupling medium between the body surface and the transducers.
