Laser target illumination system for use with laser-guided ammunition uses laser shining beam directly onto target, and laser spot search head in projectile containing submunitions

The weapon system has a laser (12) sending a narrow light beam (22) to illuminate a target (14). The projectile (10), i.e. a rocket or a shell, has a search head (18) which locks onto the laser-illuminated spot (24) on the target. The search head pivot on a swivel mounting (20) on the warhead (16). It is connected to the fuze (28,32). The warhead contains several submunitions (30).
