An ionic- or electron-optical device for precision placing and manipulation of nanoscopic objects comprises not only a shutter function but has a positioning and manipulation function directly coupled with a workpiece to give high precision adjustment of microns or nanometer level. Preferably the workpiece can be a molecule and the manipulating device can be an AFM probe with an aperture through its tip. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a process for placing nano objects; (B) a quantum construction element;and (C) an arrangement with a carrier as above.
