The method involves defining an approximation mode for approximating the rotation speed of a torque generating device to the rotation speed of a transmission shaft associated with the target gear, based on operating parameters and/or driver-stipulations. In a first approximation mode, the torque generating device is controlled by raising or reducing the torque. In a second approximation mode, the respective clutch is controlled to increase the torque transferred. Independent claims are included for further operating methods, and for a power train.
