The vehicle is engine powered and steerable by a steer-by-wire system with a manually operated steering element with a steering position sensor (SAS) and a steer-by-wire element that interacts with steerable wheels, an electronic stability program (ESP) that can be brought into interaction with the brakes and a yaw rate sensor (YRS). If an implausibility exists between the steering element sensor and the yaw rate sensor a fall-back level is activated that uses the ESP function to produce a steering movement according to the steering position of the steering element and to brake the vehicle to a halt.
