The method for the operating of a system consisting of at least one electric consumer and a fuel cell entails controlling the amount of medium supplied to the fuel cell or fuel cell stack in proportion to the power requirement of the electric consumer. The voltage of the fuel cell (BZ) or fuel cell stack is regulated at a predetermined value. The voltage is regulated via a frequency converter (UR). The value of the voltage is predetermined in dependence upon system parameters (BZsys) of the fuel cell or fuel cell stack. An independent claim is included for a device by which the aforesaid method is carried out.
