A digital photographic film (7) exposure unit has a light source with absorption or reflection modulator (10) applying controllable two dimensional light patterns (11, 12, ..., 43, 44) matching the film resolution a the film is continuously transported through, with verification by a sensor on the opposite side. Independent claims are included for procedures using the exposure unit.
