The method involves storing output values (Z) in an operating map of an engine by using input values (X, Y), at supporting points (Xi, Yj). The input values and the corresponding output values are determined through measurement. The measured input values lie between the supporting points. The interval of the measured input values and the supporting points are provided through modification of the stored output values.
