The method involves regenerating a nitrogen oxide-storage catalytic converter (32) in an operating mode. An internal combustion engine (10) is operated with a high portion of premixed combustion and lambda values in comparison to another operating mode in a third operating mode, where the high portion of the premixed combustion and lambda values are larger than a large lambda value of a standard combustion process and larger than 1. The regeneration of the catalytic converter is induced by a transition from the third operating mode to the former operating mode. An independent claim is also included for an electronic control unit for controlling an internal combustion engine.
