The method involves processing data of a pre-crash-sensor system (12) of a vehicle (10). A vehicle brake (18) is controlled based on the processed data of the pre-crash-sensor system. Brake calipers are applied on a brake disc of a brake, when a preset distance between a vehicle and an approaching obstacle falls short. The vehicle brake is controlled in such a manner that additional data of an accelerator sensor are processed. An independent claim is also included for brake assistance system having a device for controlling a vehicle brake.
