The method involves determining exhaust gas back pressure in an exhaust system from influencing variables that are interrelated with the operation of an internal combustion engine on a basis of a model. The influencing variables include a state variable of an exhaust gas. The state variable includes exhaust gas temperature (TA) that is attained by computation or by temperature- sensors. An independent claim is also included for an application of a method for determining exhaust gas back pressure in an exhaust gas system.
