The piston (11) has a bowl-shaped combustion chamber (12) into which fuel is directly injected. The fuel injector (13) is mounted in the cylinder head (10) and faces directly downward into the combustion chamber bowl. A multi-hole injector valve or an outwardly-opening cone valve generates a cone-shaped spray with an angle of between 70 and 150 degrees. The spark plug (14) is set at an angle in a tubular sheath and its electrodes (16) project into the combustion chamber immediately adjacent to the aperture for the fuel spray. The compression ratio of the engine is approximately 14:1, and the spark plug may be replaced by a glow plug.
