The device includes a vibration generator (2,3) to excite acoustically acceptable engine-similar vibrations which is coupled in the transmission path between the drive assembly (4) and the body (5). A control device (8) controls the vibration generator in dependence on the operating parameters of the drive assembly so that sound characteristics are excited inside the vehicle which correspond to the operating parameters. A learnable recognition algorithm can be provided which works on the neuronal network principle.
