The invention relates to a method and a device for modeling the environment of an autonomous mobile system to which a sensor system is attached. Specifically, a one-dimensional curve (K) is automatically determined by the sensor system and a plurality of substantially two-dimensional environment models (1) are constructed of path parameter values (d¶i¶) at appropriate intervals along the one-dimensional curve. By means of the sensor system, objects in a region along the one-dimensional curve are detected, wherein information based on detected objects is entered into the respective essentially two-dimensional environment models (1). Afterwards, the respective essentially two-dimensional environment models are referenced to the one-dimensional curve. If a respective substantially two-dimensional environment model contains entries of object information that are within a range defined by a cross-sectional profile of the mobile system, a brake signal is sent to a drive unit of the mobile system.
