The method involves sending ultrasonic impulses to a reflector or receiver in a region of a piston rod (6). A sonic transducer (13) cooperating with an electronic unit is at an upper end of the piston rod. Reflected impulses are recorded by the transducer and a peak value detector detects the impulses. A microcontroller calculates momentary distance of protruding part of the piston rod from the impulses detected by the detector. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for measuring height of a vehicle chassis.
