Coating components with alumina comprises coating a component with aluminum hydroxide prepared by adding excess aluminum or aluminum alloy to a basic aqueous aluminate solution at up to 40[deg]C, and heating the coated component. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a coated component produced as above; (2) a catalytic converter, particulate filter and particulate filter/catalytic converter system comprising at least one component partially coated as above.
