Process for the synthesis of optionally doped alkaline earth metal aluminates comprises: (a) preparing an aqueous solution of the desired stoichiometric aluminum salt, alkaline earth metal salt and optionally dopant salts; (b) adding an organic fuel to the solution obtained in the step (a); (c) heating the solution in an microwave oven to a power of greater than 200W and a frequency of 2.45 GHz for 2-11 minutes; and (d) optionally, washing, filtering and drying the obtained powder to 100[deg] C. An independent claim is included for a device comprising alkaline earth metal aluminates obtained by the process.
