Equipment for detecting water in aircraft fuel tank, which can be or is integrated in the fuel tank, comprises a vertically adjustable float (11) for placing in the fuel tank so that it is suspended in the interface between water and fuel, a lens (13) for an external incident measuring light ray (14) and a mirror (15), which is placed on the float so that the strength of the light reflected out again varies according to the vertical position of the float. An independent claim is also included for a system for detecting water in aircraft fuel tanks. The system comprises the cited equipment (10) or water drain valve for aircraft wings and an optical transceiver unit for transmitting a measuring light ray to the float and receiving the light ray reflected from the float.
