The device has a sensor device for detecting outer surrounding areas of a vehicle door and for providing corresponding image signals, where the sensor device has a camera. An image area (1) is provided for displaying an image based on the image signals. Auxiliary lines (8, 9) display a necessary auxiliary distance and a safe distance within area for opening of the vehicle door, where the lines are superimposed on the area. An independent claim is also included for a method for maintaining a distance for opening of a vehicle.
