The method is for the running of an internal combustion engine (10), whereby a reagence medium is introduced upstream of the exhaust gas treatment device (15). A reagence medium pressure (pRea) is determined in the reagence medium path (22) which lies between a dosing valve (ReaDV) and a check valve (RealV). The reagence medium pressure determined in at least one predetermined state of a reagence medium safety valve (ReaCV) and/or the reagence medium dosing valve is compared with at least one threshold value and in the event of this threshold being exceeded an error signal (F) is made available. An independent claim is included for a device for the running of an internal combustion engine including a control unit (20) to carry out the aforesaid method.
