The method involves injecting a reactive agent in a direction of passage via a reactive agent safety valve (26), a reactive agent metering valve (27) and a reactive agent injection check valve. A reactive agent source pressure is input in a path (22) between the valves (26, 27). The input pressure is compared to a threshold for a predefined state of the valve (26), and a fault signal is provided if the pressure exceeds the threshold. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an internal combustion engine.
