A plate (P) is prepared with holes (D) in a pattern. A filling mass (F) is produced by mixing a flowing polymer with a fluorescent powder. The holes are filled with the mass and the polymer is then hardened. The plate is plastic, preferably epoxy resin. The plate is made by selective laser hardening of a light-hardened plastic, later removing the non-hardened regions. Alternatively it is metal or ceramic. Before filling the holes, inner walls of the holes are coated with a reflective layer. Plate thickness is 1-3 mm, mean hold diameter is 50-200 mu m. The polymer is a wax and/or a further epoxy resin. An independent claim is included for the corresponding scintillator layer.
