An optically anisotropic composite material (3), comprising parallel aligned light absorbing or reflecting fibers (2) embedded in a transparent material. A novel optically anisotropic composite material (3) comprises parallel aligned light absorbing or reflecting fibers (2) embedded in a transparent optical material or a transparent polycrystalline ceramic. Independent claims are also included for: (i) a high spatial resolution x-ray device comprising the above optically anisotropic composite material as scintillator material; (ii) a high spatial resolution electromagnetic radiation detector comprising the above optically anisotropic composite material as scintillator material; and (iii) a process for producing the above optically anisotropic composite scintillator material.
