Preparation of peptidoglycan (I) or its derivatives from gram-positive bacteria comprising isolating (I) from a biomass (A) containing the gram-positive bacteria, where the isolation is carried out in partial stages comprising incubating (A) with a solution (containing at least one detergent) at 20-90[deg]C to obtain a mixture (II) containing solvents, detergents, soluble components, (I) and optionally further solid components, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) (I) and its derivative obtained by the method; and (2) a copolymer comprising (I) or one of its derivatives as a monomer unit.
