A vacuum coating unit(V) and a press(P) each have a moving vacuum coating tool(11,13) with forming contors(31,33) facing downwards. A compression coating tool(12) which can be alternately positioned in the vacuum coating unit or press by a guide system(17) has a contor(32) complementary to those(31,33) of the vacuum coating tools. The press coating tool(12) and vacuum coating(13) tool in the vacuum coating unit are closed against each other by positioning(22) and control(23) mechanisms for shaping material placed between them. An independent claim is included for a process for manufacturing a component comprising decorative(A) and supporting(B) layers in which: a) a decorative material layer is placed between a vacuum coating tool(13) with downward facing contors and a first press coating tool(12) with complementary contors(32) capable of movement between the vacuum coating unit(V) and a press(P); b) vacuum is applied to the vacuum coating tool to shape the decorative material layer; c) both tools are closed against each other in the vacuum coating unit and vacuum is released to transfer the shaped decorative layer onto the press coating tool; d) the press coating tool with decorative layer is moved on a guide system(17) into the press; e) material for a supporting layer(B) is applied onto a second press coating tool(11) with downward facing contors in the press and vacuum applied to form a supporting layer; g) the first and second press coating tools are closed in the press to join the decorative and supporting layers.
