The method involves directing ink drops (3, 3a, 3b, 4, 5) against a thermal reactive sensor surface (7). The sensor surface generates a variation of an electrical resistance by a temperature variation on sensor units (7a). The variation of electrical resistance is converted into an electrical signal. The sensor units are used for operating, adjusting or controlling operable ink drop releasing sources (2) of an ink-jet printer. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting of one or more free floating ink drops of an ink-jet printer.
